FG Decries Unequal Access To Education By PWD

The Federal Government has expressed concern that despite significant efforts to create equal access and opportunities for learning and employment, persons with disabilities continue to face persistent challenges in accessing education and economic opportunities

At the Africa Regional Conference on Equal Opportunity of Access to Higher Education (ARCHEAHED) in Abuja, the Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman emphasized the collective responsibility of governments, institutions, and civil society to ensure inclusivity.

GALAXY TV reports that Prof. Mamman, who was represented by the Minister of State for Education, Dr Yusuf Sununu stressed that government must shape policies supporting inclusiveness and enact laws protecting disability rights, ensuring equal access to education, health, and employment.

Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, JAMB Registrar, called on the National Assembly to establish a centre for supportive services for persons with disabilities saying This centre would provide essential technology and policies, aided by organizations like JEOG, to make life and study easier for people with special needs.

While declaring the event opened, the Speaker of the House of Representatives Hon Tajudeen Abbas, who was represented by the House leader, Hon Julius Ihonvbere, promised to support initiatives that provide opportunities for citizens with disabilities. He said the commitment is crucial in promoting inclusivity and equality for individuals with disabilities, ensuring they have equal access to education, employment, and healthcare.

The theme of the event is advancing the potentials of persons with disabilities in educational and economic development.
